Wairarapa is an extraordinary environment that offers unique cycling opportunities. Quiet backroads invite riders to visit remote locations. Only Green Jersey Cycle Tours holds the concessions required to guide you by bike or foot through the fragile and spectacular environments. We balance some days more challenging days with easy going days sipping wine. Our local knowledge means your experience will be unique and fascinating.

The itinerary includes both sealed and unsealed roads in equal portions, there is some easy-moderate off road riding included. While we supply 27.5in hardtail mountain bikes for maximum comfort, you are also welcome to discuss you specific needs with us. Cyclists will need to be confident riding grade 1-2 off road. 

This tour begins on Saturday, finishing up after breakfast the following Friday. 


Day One (Saturday): Arrive Wellington (Check in at Rydges Hotel) 

Arrive at your leisure to Wellington and receive complimentary transfers from the Airport to your accommodation. We have a welcome dinner planned for the group in the evening.

 

Day Two (Sunday): Rimutaka Rail Trail (55km cycling)

We will meet you in the morning for a 9am departure, please wear your riding gear..

Starting gently, you will ride into the Wairarapa Valley from Upper Hutt over the Rimutaka Rail Trail, a marvellous piece of history and a wonderful introduction to the region. We will ride into Featherston and have time to browse around the Fell Locomotive Museum enjoy lunch at C'est Cheese before continuing to Greytown.

Day Three (Monday): Martinborough Wine and Vine (up to 30km riding)

Wander down to Green Jersey Explorer Tours from your accommodation, today is no-lycra cycling.

Martinborough is a boutique vine village, renowned for it’s small scale Pinot Noir productions.

You will visit 3 vineyards,  an Olive Grove and a Gin distillery and taste the delights of the region.

Palliser Estate, Ata Rangi and Escarpment of Martinborough are renowned names. Reid and Reid Gin is an up and coming while Olivo Olive oil is well established for both extra Virgin and infused culinary oils.


Day Four (Tuesday) : Palliser Bay Explorer (45km riding)

You will be collected from your accommodation this morning. You shuttle to the small town of Pirinoa where we start the day with country hospitality at the Landgirl Cafe. 

Our ride begins by traversing Palliser Ridge Station. We have an opportunity to meet with the farm manager, an equity partner in the operation and hear about their innovative environmental approach to farming. We will also get to see a range of value-added products they are manufacturing from lambswool.

After we have made it across the farm we will have a brief stop to admire a unique colonial mansion before riding out onto Palliser Bay.

Lunch will be prepared at the Putangirua Pinnacles Scenic reserve. Riders have the opportunity to take a walk through native bush to view these "hoodoos". A set location for Lord of the Rings, they are a stunning geological feature. 

Our ride continues to Cape Palliser, stopping for Paua (abalone) fritters at Ngawi, viewing a colony of NZ Fur Seals and finishing the day scaling 252 steps to the Cape Palliser Lighthouse.


Day Five (Wednesday): 

Admiral Hill to Pahaoa (45km riding)

We start this day with a shuttle to the top of the local Admiral Hill road. This starting point provides incredible views and a welcome downhill start to a day of gravel riding.

45 km of true Backcountry gravel roads await us. It is rare to encounter a car on these roads.

After 25km of riding we will picnic under the trees at a beautiful country homestead, hosted by a local farming family.

Another 20km takes us to our remote beach destination, Pahaoa. This is a remote and wild beach.

The drive back to Martinborough is as beautiful as the ride we have completed.

We arrive back in Martinborough at about 3pm for some free time before our degustation dinner at Union Square. 


Day Six (Thursday): Hutt River Trail - 35km Riding

Check out from the Hotel. Drive across the Remutaka Hill and start where we started our first day's ride. We have a 35km downhill cruise along the Hutt River to Petone, where we finish our tour with a degustation lunch at La Bella Italia 

Day Seven (Friday): Wellington / Checkout

Your tour officially finishes on Friday morning after check out. You are welcome to talk to us about booking additional accommodation in Wellington for the weekend, a guided bike tour of the bays or just grab a transfer back to the airport at your leisure.
